In my pursuit of carry-on packing perfection, two things have proven to be my packing game changers: a garment rack and packing cubes. As someone who is prone to over-packing, I have found these products to be essential to my packing process. (I’ll tell you about my process in another post).
Garment Rack
I purchased the LCH Multifunctional Bamboo Garment Rack last year, and now I wouldn’t pack for a trip without it. Here are a few reasons that I love this product:
- It is inexpensive–about $40.00.
- It is easy to assemble.
- The hanging bar isn’t too wide (only 26″). That means I can’t hang too many items on the rack.
- The smaller top shelf is perfect for folded clothing like sweaters, underwear, sleepwear, etc.
- The larger bottom shelf works well for shoes, boots and heavier items.
- There are two coat hooks–one on either side of the rack. I use one for jewelry and one for a purse or tote.
- The rack is on wheels which makes it easy for me to roll it out of my bedroom. This keeps me from wearing clothing that I plan to pack.
- I can easily see what I want to pack and if everything works together. The rack also makes it easy for me to see clothing redundancies–how many pairs of jeans do I really need for a short trip? It enables me to see what I am missing. (I often forget to pack a light jacket because I don’t keep jackets and coats in my master closet.)
This rack has made my packing process very efficient. The exact rack I purchased is no longer available, but if you are interested, you can find a similar one by Kagura here.
Packing Cubes
I can’t even begin to tell you how many articles I have read and videos I have watched about packing a carry-on bag. The best of the best featured one thing in common: Packing Cubes. Silly as it sounds, for me, packing cubes are the ultimate game changer. Two years ago, I purchased eBags Ultralight Packing Cubes, and I was amazed how much I can now pack in my carry-on if I use packing cubes. These packing cubes work great for me, but the key to using the cubes is finding ones that work for you and fit perfectly in your luggage. These packing cubes come in a variety of colors and size configurations. Away Travel now has a set of packing cubes that are made specifically for their Carry-on bags. I have not purchased them but will admit I am coveting them. That said, my eBags Ultralight Packing Cubes work great. If you are interested in these packing cubes or other eBags products, you can find them here.
Trust me, get the rack and try try the packing cubes. They really are packing game-changers.
